Doc Martin is a British TV show that I fell in love with a couple of years ago. So in love, I got an idea of how to Americanize the series. I changed a lot of the characterizations - one strength of the series is that it is quintessentially British. In my series, the characters are uber American - inhabitants of a small town who are striving to build their dreams in a economically challenged place that often works against them.
But British villages and American small towns have one thing in common: residents who know how to survive and overcome financial, emotional, spiritual and physical challenges.
People often ask me where my ideas come from. For my two-part romance series, MARIAH and SHANE, the answer is the British series Doc Martin. Inside my mind, one idea blossomed into a flower so large, I found a way to sketch it in bold strokes and new colors, like an English rose turned into my favorite peony. Upon inspection, one does not look like the other. But both are pretty flowers. The writers of Doc Martin have stories to tell, as I do. The genesis of both is an interesting one. --Carol Devine
