The first word I ever read was "cat." I was in the first grade and the teacher had written those three alphabet letters on the blackboard in a row. At the same time, she was making sounds, the hard "C", the short "A", the "T" with the tip of her tongue on the roof of her mouth.
I stared at the letters. What struck me was the sudden appearance, inside my mind, of a large black cat.
I didn't know what eureka meant. I was six years old. But I remember the feeling. It was like I was a cartoon character drawn sitting at my school desk with a bright lightbulb over my head.
Reading. My first love. Maybe yours, too.
Tell me about your first word.
